Foster+Partners

The design for the Lusail Stadium has been unveiled in Qatar by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) — the organization responsible for delivering the infrastructure for the Qatar 2022 FIFA world cup.

Designed by Foster+Partners, the 80,000 capacity stadium was conceived as a ‘Golden Vessel’ inspired by the local fanar lantern a nod to the region’s craftsmanship and vernacular architecture.

The Lusail stadium will be the largest used during the tournament hosting both the opening and final games. It sits as the centerpiece of Lusail city, a new ultra-modern destination that is nearing completion and holds significant cultural and historical significance for the country. After the tournament, the stadium will be transformed into a flexible community space, made up of shops, schools and sports facilities, as well as health clinics. Completion of the facility has been scheduled for 2020.
