Fly By: Japoma Sports Complex in Douala, Cameroun by AECOM

In this video courtesy Cihan Vural, we get a look at the Japoma Sports Complex Stadium currently under construction in Cameroun.

The Japoma Stadium, or Stade omnisport de Douala (official name), is located in the Japoma locality of Douala in southwest Cameroon. Designed by the UK office of the global engineering firm, AECOM, the stadium has a 50,000 seat capacity and is heart of the Japoma Sports complex which features basketball courts, handball volleyball and tennis courts, an olympic swimming pool of 8 lanes, conference centres, commercial centers, a four star luxury hotel and a parking lot.

The Japoma Stadium was designed as a low-maintenance, economically sustainable and easy-to-navigate sports stadium suitable for hosting both football matches and athletics. The design is rooted in its local cultural and physical environment with the stadium roof and envelope reflecting the shape and colors of the nation’s traditional woven basket. The palette of materials ensures the complex is low maintenance, while a significant reduction in impermeable surfaces allows rainwater to infiltrate into the ground naturally.

The Japoma Stadium is expected to cost around $220 million and will also host some matches during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Construction of the stadium began on February 21, 2017, and was originally designed to be completed in 20 months, but now has a scheduled completion date for later this year.
