Sign up to join Hive Earth in building a maternity ward in Ghana with rammed earth

Sign up to join the Hive Earth team over the summer in Accra and help build part of a maternity Ward for the Market women of Mallam Attah using rammed earth.

About this Event

Hive Earth is pleased to be working in collaboration with the Rotary club of Accra Ridge (RCAR), Orthner Orthner & Associates and workshop volunteers to build this Delivery Unit which will benefit many women in this area. The rotary club is seeking to help reduce maternal mortality cases and to also facilitate smooth health delivery for expectant mothers within the market and community as a whole.

Orthner Orthner & Associates offered their services pro-bono to design the proposed Delivery Unit with the use of locally sourced materials in mind. Rammed earth was specified for the walls because it is a sustainable material with a unique aesthetic. In addition, it has many desirable properties including improved acoustics, temperature control and minimal maintenance which is perfect for the market environment and aesthetically beautiful. Locally source timber and bamboo are also specified for the walls, roof, door and window framing to reinforce the natural aesthetic of the design. In addition, clerestory louvered Windows’s are designed to enhance natural ventilation & day lighting .

Through this workshop, participants will be helping to build the rammed earth walls for the structure and get the opportunity to learn about rammed earth construction. The expert rammed earth team at Hive Earth will lead the workshop , showing how to put a formwork together, the right mix and how to ram the walls.
