This month’s edition of Caauie Lifestyle’s event, 9H Design talk will be taking place on Thursday the 31st of August at Fourteen36 Mall. Lagos based Nigerian Architect Tosin Oshinowo of CM Design Atelier will be speaking at the event on the topic of “The AfroModernist Diaries”.
As described by Caauie Lifestyle, “At a symposium last year, the architect Tosin Oshinowo @tosin.oshinowo was visibly excited at the prospect of emergence of an African Modernist architecture; home grown for us. The work of her firm cmDesign Atelier @cmdesign_atelier exhibit this common trait: they are noticeably ‘heavier’ than conventional Modernism, but never really a pastische assemblage of ‘natural’ material. As a matter of fact, except when black, the buildings are most often white.“
The Maryland Mall is her largest [realised] building, but is in many ways another side to her thinking, displaying affinity with the work of OMA (she once worked in their Rotterdam offices), while her numerous beach houses on Ilashe Island point to a more inclusive style.
