WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR AT 100% DESIGN SOUTH AFRICA

100% Design South Africa being the must-see event on the local design calendar has so much on offer that every exhibition stand is a veritable highlight. Here are just a few of the things you should not miss at this fourth edition of the annual event.

Feature Displays by invitation of 100% Design South Africa

Each year, 100% Design South Africa’s Creative Director Laurence Brick and Programmes Director Cathy O’Clery honour a select number of leading local designers with an invitation to inhabit key feature displays that not only form part of the annual attractions but are intended to stimulate and inspire the industry as a whole.

Gregor Jenkin

For 2017, the Feature Designer of the Year is award-winning furniture designer Gregor Jenkin, who will present a new collection of unique pieces at the show. Source IBA was selected for 100% Hotel and will present the ‘Afrihotel’ –  a concept for an urban African hotel. The buzzing hub of the show, the 100% Design Café will feature a uniquely designed environment by leading furniture designer David Krynauw. Raw Studios will set to work on this year’s 100% Office to present the workspace of the future.

Curated Feature Displays

100% Design South Africa 2017 boasts three all-new curated displays that are a first for the show. The We are Joburg exhibition, the Young Gauteng pavilion, and the Fabric & Wallpaper Gallery are all carefully curated by Cathy O’Clery of Platform Creative Agency.

We are Joburg and Young Gauteng are proudly presented in association with Gauteng Tourism Authority. The former focuses on the urban energy of Jozi’s industrial design set, and boasts designs by Mia Widlake, Julia Day of Generation, Dokter and Misses, Joe Paine, Tonic, and others. The latter signposts Gauteng’s new crop of bright and beautiful surface designers such as graphic artists, illustrators and textile designers.

The Fabric & Wallpaper Gallery is styled like an art gallery display and showcases a variety of fabrics and wall coverings from a number of studios, with a particular focus on indigo blue, black, silver and green colourways. Expect swathes of fabrics, swatches and samples books from T & Co., Dreamweaver Studios, Robin Sprong, Warwick Fabrics, Home Fabrics, The Silk and Cotton Co., and other top houses.

Themed Pavilion

100% Talent is specifically aimed at introducing works by emerging local designers. These rising stars include: Pure Line Interior Design, Kino, Notation Design, Natasha van Niekerk Fine Art Photography, Gold Bottom, Trees and North, NT Design Studio, and Ashlee Ainsley Lloyd.

Only at 100% Design South Africa…

Seed to Seat is a project of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), which has commissioned seven top South African furniture designers to design a seat using a sustainable hardwood. Look out for new seats by Laurie Wiid Van Heerden of Wiid Design, Andrew Dominic, David Krynauw, James Mudge, Dokter and Misses, Jacques Cronje of Minima and Christoph Karl of Guideline, that will be unveiled at 100% Design South Africa.

Caesarstone has collaborated with like-minded and influential South African designers – Dokter and Misses, Chris and Anna Weylandt of Weylandts, and Gregor Jenkin Studio – to challenge boundaries by incorporating Caesarstone into furniture concepts. Caesarstone Concepts officially launches at 100% Design South Africa. Each of the collaborating designers has produced an entirely new piece using Caesarstone, which will be unveiled at the show.

The Light Tank is an immersive, multi-disciplinary display that combines LED lighting, sound and animation. This experiential installation is a team effort, presented by interactive designer Goddy Roodt, cinematographer Izelle van Zyl, contemporary artist Matty Roodt, structural designer Leon Roodt of Ergoform, visual effects artist Lloyd Wilgen, and composer Deon van Heerden.

The South African Mint, commissioned five local designers to create pieces inspired by the Kruger Rand to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Designer works by Blandat, Pichulik, Okapi, Thabo Makhetha and Ceramic Matters were on display at this year’s World Money Fair in Berlin, before showing at 100% Design South Africa.

In addition to the key features above, the show boasts over 130 individual exhibition stands and large pavilions, such as the PPC Imaginarium travelling exhibition. 100% Design South Africa is the largest exhibition platform for contemporary high-end design on the continent and is an ideal sourcing ground for both interior design professionals and private individuals.
