Whether you’re starting out in university halls or sharing a house with your friends, student rooms can seem rather generic and boring when you first move in.
The first thing that you will want to do is make it feel more homely and welcoming, especially if you’ve just moved out to university for the first time from your parents’ home and are feeling a little homesick. The good news is that there are tons of cheap, easy décor ideas you could turn to that won’t get you in trouble at the end of your tenancy, either. Here are some great ideas to consider!
1. Get Comfy:
The main thing that you want your student room to be is comfortable, cosy, and inviting. After all, you’re going to be spending much of your time there, whether you’re watching Netflix shows, chilling with your new friends or getting down to revision and exam prep. So, get some scatter cushions for your bed, a cosy throw, and light a couple of scented candles if that’s your thing. A cosy rug on the floor will complete the look. You’ll be surprised at how much of a big difference it can make!
2. Get Some Pictures:
Most student accommodation will allow you to put pictures and posters on the walls as long as the paint remains intact when you take them down. White tac is the best option for this, or you could get command hooks for framed photos and canvases. A cute idea is to get some pegs on a string or on some fairy lights and use them to hang photographs of your family, friends, and pets back at home so all your happy memories are on display.
3. DIY Cheap Furniture:
Not the accommodation-provided furniture, of course, but if you have cheap furniture of your own such as a bookshelf, bedside table or even a table lamp, there’s plenty of inexpensive, fun ways to personalise them to your tastes and make them look like you paid a lot more for them. If you’re in need of furniture, check out sites such as Upcycle or Facebook Marketplace for freebies and work some DIY magic. A lick of furniture paint can turn an old bedside table into a shabby chic masterpiece or poke decorative holes in your lampshade for a cool light effect in your room. If you really want to get stuck in, you can make all kinds of cool furniture items and more for your room out of old pallets.
4. Pick Luxury Accommodation:
Failing all of that, if you want a ready-made room there are plenty of luxury accommodation options to look into. This is especially true if you’re planning on studying abroad, as you’ll want to ensure you’re student room feels like a home away from home.
