Villa L7: A proposed Modernist Residential Model by Eada Studios and Micdee Designs

Villa L7 is a contemporary residential development designed via a collaborative effort between Bapije Magani and Michael Awonowo of Eada studios and Micdee Designs respectively.

The villa; set in a remote location surrounded by well-developed vegetation beautifully integrates the traditional residential spaces into themselves with the ideals of modern architecture’s forms and styling as the design seeks to make the indoor spaces simple yet functional while enhancing its connections to the exterior complex. Careful consideration was given to design decisions to achieve an architecture rooted in basic things like function, form, structure, lighting, materials and details.

The building, sitting on 520 sqm area of land projects from the gentle sloping site on concrete columns. Its ground floor is accessed by overlapping concrete slabs supported on concrete columns planted in the ground which leads to the entrance. The spaces on this floor enjoy a deluge of natural light with verandah extensions on the front and rear; the front for relaxation and rear for an outdoor pool. The Kitchen, Dining & Living Room are treated as one major activity space resulting in a large open plan, backing the car port and an en-suite guest room is provided adjacent to the anteroom with large fenestrations for lighting, ventilation & serene views of the landscape. The interior floors in itself is finished with wood patterned vinyl. This enhances the lush experience of a large open plan.

The Upper floor is accessed by the internal staircase that is welcomed by a family lounge adjacent to the study. The bedrooms in typical contemporary style, feature large fenestrations for lighting, ventilation and serene views of the landscape. The Master bedroom, the largest of the rooms opens to a terrace that sits over a cantilevered extension that shades the car park. This design underscores the beliefs of the young designers that the simplicity of contemporary minimalist ideals not only results in ease of construction but also aesthetic elegance.
